Each year in Wokingham, the Mayor runs a competition to become their ‘Mini-Mayor’ and to act as an ambassador for the town’s young generation, attending a number of events alongside the Mayor.   All the Year 5 children in the town are invited to enter the competition, by writing a letter to the Mayor, telling her what they like most about the town and what they would wish for in the future to make Wokingham even better.

The children of Year 5 at Windmill Primary School were very keen to take part and put an enormous amount of effort into writing their letters.  Eventually, Jayden H and Tayla, were chosen to go and meet the Mayor and other officials for tea at the Town Hall.  Both of them made a wonderful impression on the people they met, and made the school very proud of them.

Ultimately though, only one person can be chosen to become the Mini-Mayor, and we were all almost too delighted for words when we learned that it was to be someone from our school!  It could have been either of them, but it was Jayden who edged in front in the end.  His passion for the town and exciting ideas for making it even better (including having excess produce from the many local allotments available for sale to local residents) were what made Jayden stand out.

So, this coming year he will get to wear his special robe as he attends events such as the Wokingham Heritage Day, the Fireworks Display in November and Dressing the Christmas Tree in December.  We feel so proud that Jayden was chosen and know that he will be a fine ambassador for young people in our town.  We’re looking forward to hearing from him about the memories he is going to be making in his ‘Mini-Mayor’ role.
