On Friday 12th June, Meridian High School hosted one of the standout events of this year’s GLF Schools’ Foundation Boundless Festival – the Spelling Bee competition. With participation at its highest yet, the event welcomed students from 6 secondary schools and 12 primary schools, creating an atmosphere of excitement, camaraderie, and fierce competition.
Due to the significant growth in demand compared to last year, the competition was hosted across two separate marquees, allowing both the primary and secondary events to flourish independently and elevating the overall standard of competition.
Primary Competition
The primary pupils spent the morning immersed in a series of engaging spelling games, sharpening their skills ahead of the main event. This preparation led into two highly competitive heats.
- Heat 1: The Vale emerged victorious, narrowly edging out Salfords in a closely fought contest.
- Heat 2: There was nothing to separate Cuddington Primary and Hillcroft, with both schools progressing to the final after an exceptional display.
The final proved incredibly tense, with all three schools demonstrating outstanding spelling ability. So closely matched were the competitors that organisers had to dip into the ‘super hard’ word list to find a winner. Eventually, Cuddington Croft Primary triumphed, capping off a remarkable performance.
Secondary Competition
In the secondary marquee, students competed across a series of events throughout the day, building up to the showcase Spelling Bee final. The standard of spelling was equally impressive, with competitors pushing each other to the highest level.
Once again, the competition proved so strong that the most challenging words were required to determine a winner. In the end, Merstham Park School emerged victorious after an outstanding display of skill and composure.
A Celebration of Talent and Teamwork
Across both marquees, the quality of competition was exceptional, reflecting the commitment, preparation, and enthusiasm of all participating students. The Spelling Bee continues to be a highlight of the Boundless Festival, showcasing not only academic excellence but also confidence, resilience and teamwork.
A huge thank you goes to all the schools and students who took part, and to those who made the event possible. In particular, we would like to thank Mr Pollard, Miss Whitehorn and Mrs Olusamokun for their hard work in organising the event.
A special mention must also go to Mrs Anderson for her warm hospitality at Meridian High School – and for her wonderful bee costume, which was a highlight of the day for many!
