The GLF Schools Basketball Festival brought together students from across the Trust for an exciting day of competition, collaboration, and high-quality sport. Featuring six of our eight secondary schools, the festival provided an opportunity for pupils in Years 8/9 and Years 10/11 to compete in structured round-robin tournaments, demonstrating the growing strength of basketball across GLF Schools.
Across both age groups, the event was characterised by excellent skill levels, strong teamwork, and a fantastic sense of sportsmanship, with students representing their schools with pride. A special mention must go to Glyn School, who hosted and organised the event superbly. The day ran seamlessly, providing an excellent environment for competition and ensuring a positive experience for all schools involved.
The Year 8/9 competition was particularly close, with all teams performing strongly throughout the round robin stage. Several matches were tightly contested, reflecting the improving standard of basketball provision across our schools. At the conclusion of the group stages, the standings were so evenly matched that progression had to be decided on countback. Meridian High School emerged with the strongest points difference, earning their place in the final alongside The Beacon School. The final lived up to expectations, with both teams playing with intensity and determination. In a closely fought contest, Meridian High School narrowly secured victory, demonstrating composure and teamwork in key moments to take the title.
The Year 10/11 competition also delivered a series of high-quality and competitive matches. Following the round robin stage, Glyn School and The Beacon School progressed to the final. Notably, The Beacon School entered a hybrid team, supported by two students from Merstham Park School due to injury within their squad. This collaborative approach reflected the inclusive spirit of the festival and ensured all teams could compete at the highest level. The final itself was an excellent contest, played at high intensity with both teams demonstrating strong tactical awareness and teamwork. The Beacon School produced a strong performance to win the match on court with two passages of extra time needed to separate the two teams. However, in accordance with the agreed competition format, and recognising the hybrid nature of the Beacon team, the tournament trophy was awarded to Glyn School.
The strength of The Beacon’s performance across both age groups was a clear reflection of their recent investment in basketball. With support from the Foundation to bring in external coaches from Cobham Cobras, both their Year 8/9 and Year 10/11 teams reached their respective finals—an outstanding achievement and a testament to the impact of sustained development and opportunity.
The festival was a fantastic celebration of sport across the Trust, providing opportunities for students to:
- Compete in a structured and competitive environment
- Develop teamwork, communication, and leadership skills
- Build confidence through sport
- Connect with peers from other GLF schools
The event also highlighted the strength of collaboration within GLF Schools—not only between staff organising and officiating the day, but also between students, as seen in the cooperative approach taken to ensure teams could still compete despite challenges. Above all, the festival showcased the power of sport to bring young people together. The energy, commitment, and enjoyment on display throughout the day were a credit to all involved.
We look forward to building on this success and continuing to grow basketball opportunities across GLF Schools in the future.
