Dance was centre stage, when students from Aureus School travelled to London’s Excel Centre to take part in the world’s largest dance event.
Forty-four Year 9 and 10 dancers from the Didcot school spent the day at MOVE IT on March 20, where they enjoyed a wide range of performances and workshops, and drew inspiration from professionals within the industry.
“MOVE IT is known for its electric atmosphere, and students felt the excitement the moment they stepped inside the venue,” said Amy King, Head of Performing Arts at Aureus. “Surrounded by colourful stalls, industry professionals, and world-class performers, the Aureus dancers were able to see the breadth of opportunities within the dance world.”
The annual event featured performances from national dance schools, as well as musical theatre showcases from West End favourites such as Matilda and Sweeney Todd. In addition, colleges and professional companies were on hand to represent routes into further training and career opportunities, while workshops allowed attendees to hone their talents.
“Some students in Years 9 and 10 took part in high-level workshops, dancing alongside older and more experienced performers,” continued Miss King, who organised the trip.
“Despite the challenge, they rose to the occasion – a moment of pride for their teachers and a confidence boost for the students themselves.”
“For many students, especially those in Years 9 and 10 preparing for GCSE pathways, MOVE IT offered exposure to professional-level dance; opportunities to explore future training routes; a chance to perform and learn in a world-class environment; and motivation to continue developing their craft,” she added.
“After a packed day of learning and exploring, the group returned to Aureus School tired but inspired. Staff praised the students for their maturity, enthusiasm, and commitment throughout the event. We were delighted with how well the dancers represented the school.”
