Overcoming barriers, raising aspirations and making change happen featured in special sessions for Year 8 students at The Beacon School in Banstead.
The day of events led by Humanutopia, which specialises in providing thought-provoking and inspiring events for schools, offered students the chance to reflect on their own behaviour, their relationships with others, and the role they play in building a positive school community.
Through a range of interactive activities, group discussions, and personal challenges, students were encouraged to think deeply about how they treat themselves and those around them. The sessions are designed to inspire students to make positive change and consider why and who they have become.
One of the most powerful parts of the day came when several students bravely chose to share their personal experiences with the entire year group. These moments created a respectful and supportive atmosphere, highlighting the importance of empathy, understanding, and listening to others.
The final session saw the students imagine who they could be in the future, discussing their dreams and goals. Everyone commits to making three positive changes which will improve their future.
Feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive: "The Humanutopia day was really fun, the staff taking it were funny and energetic. I left the day understanding how to be a better person and member of our community" - Ella P in Y8.
"I liked how the presenters were very determined, I thought it was very powerful when other people shared their thoughts and feelings" - Isla S Y8.
Headteacher, James Grant Duff, said: “Throughout the day, students showed exceptional maturity, engagement, and respect, demonstrating just how ready they are to be positive role models within the school. The energy, openness, and compassion they brought to the experience were truly commendable.
The Humanutopia team were incredibly impressed with the enthusiasm and honesty shown by our Year 8s, and we are proud of the way they embraced the opportunity to grow both individually and as a community.”
