Banstead Infants is a ‘Good’ School

Banstead Infant School continues to be rated a ‘good’ school, with Ofsted noting how pupils “are excited about learning and thoroughly enjoy school… happily waving to their parents as they join their classmates.” It is wonderful to know that “Parents are very happy with the school.”

The inspector praised the children for the kindness they show to one another, commenting that they “behave exceptionally well throughout the school.” She recognised that “Well-established routines and high expectations ensure that pupils feel safe, comfortable and well cared for.”

The inspector recognised the academic strength of the school, noting that “Pupils achieve well in a range of subjects. In 2023, they achieved exceptionally well in reading and writing.” She complimented the “new and highly ambitious curriculum” which has been introduced across mathematics, science, history, art and design technology, observing that it “has been carefully designed to reflect current research about how pupils learn well. It is well sequenced and builds on the school’s previous effective curriculum, with an increased focus on deepening pupils’ learning.” The positive impact on pupil’s learning is already beginning to show.

The inspection report recognises how arrangements to support pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) have improved. It states “Assessments and transition arrangements are used well to identify children’s needs as early as possible and to ensure that suitable adaptations are in place when they join the school… Pupils with SEND are valued members of the school’s happy and inclusive community. They are actively involved in all aspects of school life and learn enthusiastically alongside their classmates.” As a result, pupils with SEND learn well.

The inspector noted the effective phonics programme, and that “Teachers and support staff teach early reading skills confidently and knowledgably”, providing extra help to those who need it through regular opportunities to read and ‘keep up’ sessions. She saw how high-quality texts are a key element of the curriculum, and are used well to promote enjoyment of reading. It is wonderful to read that “during the inspection, pupils spoke about how much they like to read and talked about some of their favourite authors.”

The report mentions the breadth the school offers, acknowledging how “Pupils have lots of experiences which enliven learning. They learn skills to help them to navigate the world around them safely, such as first aid skills, online safety strategies, and how to swim.”
